  • Day 2 of blizzard in Rankin Inlet

Outside the suite in Day 2 of blizzard in Rankin again the office closed! But at one point ventured outside. This is inside the Social Services van when starting it up. Somehow as well back window vents open so inside of back seats covered in snow. I walked half a block and went visiting. The wind was behind me and about minus 28 but at  60 km/hr it felt like minus 48oC.Meeka and Nanook  were playing in the blizzard with frozen poo! Cindy  was ouside with her dogs... these are her photos of my approach.Walking towards the dogs...I encouraged them to play.Meeka and Nanook would romp between myself and their owner. Snowy satelite dish outside Cindy and Matt's apartment..the source for their internet. Tea and relaxing dogs after the outside romp in the blizzard.

  • Rankin offices closed due to weather conditions....

The van had been warming up but the power went out at 7:30 AM just as I was getting up and ready for work. So there was a scramble for the candles and matches. We knew a possible blizzard was in the forecast and bought a few extras at the Northern yesterday. All night it had been windy but this was reality. My roomate also a social worker had the radio phone so shortly after 9 AM we got the call that the office was closed for the day.An errie world of blowing outside, so hunkered down back in bed until the natural day light came. Morning spent wrapped up sitting on the couch just looking out the window to some of the following scenes.
Got several letters written and the power finally back briefly at noon, enough to brew a pot of coffee and watch the beginning of the CBC live broadcast of the memorial service in Bathurst NB for the seven teens members of the local basket ball team who died in the crash of their van last Saturday. It was very moving how the whole of this community came together in prayer, music, candle lights and tributes. Power off again and finally back an hour later. Many reminders today of both the fragility and blessings of life.

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
