  • Spring not yet sprung..

.From comments on other blogs the signs of spring are starting to appear whether longer days that allow for treks on the ice and being out with sleds and dogs, arctic winter games and school outings with my northern friends through to daffodils and crocuses appearing in the pacific north west to the strawberries in Florida. In Alberta, the temperatures have been hovering around freezing or a few degrees above and then there will be another threat of snow but often short lived. The key for the dog walks is getting into the ravine before the melt occurs because it can be pretty muddy and soggy otherwise. At the back door the towel awaits muddy paws and Nanuq sometimes thinks it is a tug of war game but Dysis is enjoys sleeping in the sun on the remnants of snow in the back yard. I do not look forward to when it totally disappears and I am dealing with garden dirt….already the treasures of bones and other things buried last fall are starting to emerge. The water is flowing in mill creek ravine but not yet in the North Saskatchewan as shown here in the downtown viewed from near Capilano on the south side. The beavers have been busy over the winter and chickadees very prevalent. As well the cedar wax wings hundreds of them will circle and descend on the trees…often the mountain ash are favorites.

My house plants have responded abundantly to the lenghthening days but with some confusion as the poinsetta saved from a year ago has red brac leaves and the little Christmas cactus produced lovely red blooms.

My own schedules these days seems to involve many circles…..writing circle, swim circle, centering prayer circle & getting lost by driving in circles. Did some helping out with making lunches and don't know how I couldn't find the new Bissell center downtown Sunday morning! Drove around for 40 minutes and must have passed it at least 3 times.

Heading off to our provincial social work conference ACSW over the next 3 days and yes I do know where the Shaw conference center is!

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
