  • Wheelchair walk

Beautiful Sunday afternoon & after Mass at the small hospital chapel, Amelia wheeled me up to this small gazebo park,. overlooking the Ottawa General. Lots of green and can only imagine what it is like in full summer bloom, identified as "Butterfly Park". There were some grey squirrels running about and a larger beaver or marmot sized rodent in the grass we could not identify???

Amelia leaves back to university in Montreal tomorrow for the week, and upon her return will hopefully know my discharge date. No internet in the interim

  • Happier Hospital scenes

One of the great things about this rehab stay (besides having showers) is being able to get outside. Spring has definitely sprung in Ottawa and the mobility of the wheelchair to get on some of the paths outside the hospital does wonders to the mental state. Not far from where I got settled is the hospital helipad and observed this one taking off.

My brother came up Friday morning from TO and although nippy enjoyed the sunshine.  Don is doing a x-c bike fundraising trip for the YMCA this June from Victoria to Thunder Bay.

Also my room mate and family today stopped for some chats...we are the non-mobile ones!

  • Now in rehab....

Here are a few shots of some of the journey, including the small ER room in the health center in Pangnirtung where after the fall in the ice, others arrived including some of my work colleagues to bundle up in the bylaw ambulance and set up with pain meds    and this is the good leg Two medivacs from Pang to Iqaluit and then to Ottawa....finally met by the daughter...what a welcome sight! After my  left femur surgery, 8 screws, 7" plate, 23 staples, 4 days in orthopedics, a 4 bed ward which didn't allow alot of sleep, but now  I have moved over to a short term rehab here in Ottawa....with PT/OT routines and for the first time in 10 days a shower, what a relief, and finally got outside in my wheelchair, even if it is just to sit in the entry way.

  • Not Emonton but Ottawa.....so stop and say hi if around!

Hates x-ray machines....have need to used them at least 8 Times in last 2 day..medivaced from Pang to Iqaluit to Ottawa...and surgery as have a broken hip fracture in 3 place...from a Sunday morning ski...now in Ottawa general Hospital om 6Ne orthopedics...any one in area would like to visit would welcome!

  • Spring in the Arctic

Spring is here...kids on bikes! There are definitely signs of spring with the lengthening days and unbelievable sky as this early April sunset at 7:30 PM .warm spring weather brings out the bikes and fun on the ice.

This past week or so has included both solitary and social activities:walks, skiing, good food and gatherings with other health center staff and community feasts, in which I sampled raw frozen caribou at hamlet feast as well as frozen arctic char.

We were given a tour of the new health center to open summer 2010 shown here with some of my colleagues, and had breakfast goodies when one social worker was leaving... she was the same one that found the puppy in the van overnight, so her gift was a stuffed puppy.

Really seemed to click with on of the nurses, we were often walking buddies. here on her last day.

Walking up behind the hamlet on Good Friday afternoon.. view of Pang from hike behind town,  I followed skidoo trails and used set of poles.Beginning of hike in local park. Large boulders and skidoo tracks produce a  totally different world cold and silence. On hike back down large boulder with town and fjord in background.

Easter Sunday morning  took a walk on the ice here looking down the valley, sky was clear and an awesome day! Looking up at some houses from the ice.

About 1:30 PM just after Easter Sunday service which was 2 hours and mainly in Inuktituk.
Easter dinner at NICs house was scrumptious.
or Sunday evening about 6 PM.

  • Kudlik (qulliq)

"Seal oil lamp. A kudlik provided both heat and light in the igloo. It was carved from soapstone. The Inuit preferred to burn seal oil. However, they often used other kinds of fat in times of shortage.

The kudlik reminded me of this morning's passage at church...

    John 1:4-5
"The Word was the source of life and this life brought light to the people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out".

  • A little dog humour....

Some you today will be thinking cute rabbits and kittens but my focus is always dogs and hope this adds a smile.

Walking before church this morning encountered under a snowmobile these two small dogs.Obviously mixed breeds probably with some genes from the original Corgis  brought here by missionaries in the 1950s or so the story goes.   Both were very yappy and vigilant. Apparently their noise annoyed a neighbour next door who called out his window for the barking to stop, followed by noises of a popgun...I decided to leave.

Below was an email from a friend...

"I  got stopped for speeding yesterday!

I  THOUGHT I COULD TALK MY  WAY OUT  OF  IT UNTIL THE OFFICER LOOKED AT

MY  DOG IN THE BACK SEAT
    ...

This one is destined to become a classic!

Note the claw marks in the leather seat! "

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
