Month: March 2011

  • And the rest of the story...

Thanks for the comments and guesses! I spent my last evening in Florida at Epcot center which ended in a fantastic fireworks display over the water and an opening globe...thus number one photo.

The second one...Michel was close... The cane that was brought back from Cuba as a gift from my boarder but needed to be glued together....  originally screwed but due to less humidity here did not fit together properly. This was done by one of my carpenter friends...thus the instructions!

  • Whaazzitt weekend photos....

For your Sunday morning amusement a few recent photos ...what do you think they are?

  • Social vs solitary does not mean lonely!

This does not necessarily reflect yours truly all the time but found this fun video....

  • Haunting the old neighbourhood and other random activities!

Do you ever find yourself unconsciously driving in an older familiar neighbourhood or on a route that an ingrained pattern to work or home and then suddenly realize “  Oh yeah, I don’t live here any more or that store on the corner, when did that move? “

Occasionally I am in the same situation but my old neighbourhood still includes some good friends, my church, my hairdresser, my vet and some great coffee spots.

One of these was my stopping spot yesterday afternoon. Wild Earth Bakery/Cafe on 99 St, expanded much in recent years and great place for stopping, offerings include different coffees, muffins, wraps or my snack fresh split pea soup and whole wheat slice of bread.

Then the trip for my coffee addiction..

I love the smell of a good coffee shop....Highlander Grogg one of my favorites.
The connections exceedingly interesting when one attends a social event in one's "old neighbourhood" aka  " old Scona," house concert for Blues band.

Last Sunday night was a house concert with friends just a block away from the old house with a blues band. I think the sepia tones here really captured the laid back nature of the band.

The Crooked Brothers play "Another Sun" at a packed house in Ellison's Grocery store/ cafe in Nelson, BC- January 2011

Dogs well dogs are so good to have again… I just love how my dog thinks she is invisible because her head is under the foot of my bed.

The following video was courtesy my boarder as there is the occasional food snatching.

Someone helped themselves to the kitty Cat treats while I was out!! Lets see.....hmmmmmmm

Walks not everyday but when I can especially on the weekend.

This  photo inspired the thought that "every season has its beauty" from a walk yesterday with dogs… the lichen against the barren trees we may not see at other times.

No dogs allowed but last Sunday afternoon got out on the skis probably for a final time in the season. A 30 minute drive south/east of the city is Strathcona wilderness center.

One of the animals seen was this porcupine whom did not seem in the least bit bothered by all the skiers... chewing contentedly in the top of the tree. Glad it was the TOP of the tree as they have 30,000 quills according to the sign.

Lastly and occupying most of my week is work!!!

March is National Social Work Month!

Every day I am reminded how our clients/patients/parishioners/customers/ staff/co-workers are always teaching us new lessons or reminding us of old ones.

  • So you think you had snow?

Little time to write these days with work but thought would share these shots of Dysis on the snow pile in the back yard ...a favorite spot she is a husky after all! gives on some idea of what the winter snow fall has been like in Alberta. fortunately warming up just to near freezing and some melting.

  • Sunday morning meditation

    Psalm 121

    A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
       he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
       will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD watches over you—
       the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
       nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
       he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
       both now and forevermore.

  • Lent...a time of new beginnings

Last Monday I had time to breathe and one of those “ I am content “ moments and happy to be back on home territory. Dogs sleeping on office floor, sunshine coming through windows, birds scrounging in backyard snow, laundry doing, bed changed, coffee pot cleaned, floors vacuumed and washed,  herb cheese bread in bread machine, dishwasher run and unloaded.

When I came back from my holiday I went straight into a few days of working at the hospital and thought “well I can handle this just work my ass off and pay off the credit cards “ but WHOA need to slow down and do some planning.

Lent is upon us and it is often a time of new beginnings.

Lent is the time in the Christian calendar that moves from the edge of winter through Easter, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday and marks the 40 days of Jesus fasting in the desert. Traditionally a period of fasting and prayer.

There is a neat website that talks about doing small things every day to make ours a better world. http://www.livelent.net/about.html

So do I dare even look at the next few months and if I had the time and money and health what would be my goals.

Will be at the house and in the city for the next 2-3 months, working almost full time and thus plan on that basis….so here goes…

    • Daily 20 min. meditation, prayer and reading
    • Being on time..this is a difficult one as I am perennially known as being late but it means planning ahead and putting some margins into my life.
    • So health wise for next two months I would like to keep my swimming up twice a week and yoga once a week. Also would like to get in one or two skis before the end of the season. I also need to get to physio to correct the limp and use of the cane.
    • Weight wise would like to lose about 5 lbs and this may be as simple as giving up Tim Horton’s donuts! My usual is a large coffee, double milk, with a blueberry fritter.
    • Finances: Have to sit down and go through bills and pay what I can or at least make a list.
    • Not touching any of the credit cards
    • Putting a portion from every pay check into savings and giving
  • A look into futures...

A fun video done while at Epcot Disney yesterday.

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
