  • "Day is done, gone the sun...

These are the words of taps sung to end the summer camping day and indelibly etched in my memory over the years of attending Alberta Pioneer Ranch camps, beginning  as a young university student in the 1970s, a young mother directing Jr. Girls Camp, International and family Christmas camps and the odd women's or work weekend.

Last weekend was one of those time when I went down just for two days to volunteer ( digging the garden of course ) with about 30 - 40 others who were preparing the site for the spring outdoor ed and soon to come summer camps.

http://www.pioneercamps.ab.ca/index.php. Associated with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship this site at Rocky Mt. House on Crimson Lake in central Alberta, this site is celebrating its 60th year this summer.

Many old and new contacts made and stories shared.

Here are some of my photos.

Two days of perfect weather..sunset Saturday about 9 PM...outdoor fire pit not used as provincial fire ban but note the seats in the front

Loons, Canada geese and frogs could be heard..Crimson Lake totally calm ..finished the day with taps "Day is done, gone the sun, from hills, from the lake, from the sky, all is well safely rest, God is nigh "

Two sisters on the wharf in receding shadows..
Not far from the cabin where the dogs and I  stayed..love this seat carved out of an old stump, peaceful meditative spot
New leaves..twig near where I was sitting

Sunday afternoon out side camp kitchen...I worked on digging and raking in flower bed...good thing as Monday was a down pour!
Sunday morning worship led by two dads and their children... note the 7 year old girl on right playing guitar cording through all four songs and boy in front aged 4 was the " the drummer".

Just down from my cabin some old voyager canoes, loved just to watch bullrushes and water

Here is where the dogs start to act like beavers....
Any thing that moves can be hauled...Dysis does not like the water as much as Nanuq and stared at a rock for a long time, possibly wonering if it was alive.
Nanuq repeatedly hauled branches and sticks many larger than herself..
    Wet, happy dogs.

  • At 80% but should have done better...

  • Shake it ....how long will they last? New dog toys for Nanuq

Last weekend I hit out local church rummage sale and among other things bought some used stuff toys. Piled them neatly in the dining room the blue eyed husky dog reminds me of dogs i have had and will remain up but the rest are fair game, and you can see the result.

Pooh bear got well shredded.Baby moose flipped aroundDysis of course just lays back watching

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
