  • January 2014 already! Saturday bird count...

    DSCN7113 - Version 2

Cold but beautiful in Alberta country...we are warming up now by end of week but last Saturday when out on my bird countDSCN7125 it was -30 oC or -22 degree Fahrenheit!

Initial meeting at the Fallis Store DSCN7122at 0900 to coordinate the count for our zone. A very cold day of -25oC to -30oC so needed to be prepared. Mostly driving, about 2 hours,DSCN7111 but there were some areas of bush/lakeshore that can be covered on foot or snowshoes given the amount of snow we have had this winter. However a 25 minute walk with the dog was more than enough. We saw a pileated woodpecker,DSCN7110 hordes of black capped chickadees, 3-5 bluejays, and odd magpie and raven.

  • Shifting seasons and the Rockies!

In one day last month, October 25,  we got our first snow that stayed. Starting from drizzling rain to sleet and finally overnight a blanket of white. Finishing my outdoor task ended up planting bulbs: tulips. daffodils and garlic, wet and cold but done!!!

This past weekend was visiting family. actually a memorial due to an unexpected death , my brother in law Allin died tragically in an accident in the mountains last week.  doing what he was absolutely passionate about. Sadly, an avid hunter and outdoorsman,  he died of hypothermia during an expedition west of Nordegg on Tuesday, November 5, 2013...The family on both sides, gathered from all over North America.

are from their farm, west of Calgary. looking towards the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

One is reminded of both the beauty and the power of nature.

Last minute find of a weekend pass, practical new blue folk fest chair packed in car or on bike, hot weather, meeting new and old friends on the hill, favorites with musicians and new discoveries!

Photo: Yours truly with chair, hat and sunglasses..quite a sight when I biked over!

Dramatic end Sunday night, Four Strong winds "got us " with sudden thunderstorm... it was something else! Loreena McKennitt got through most of her set, with a few queries as to how many until complete. much thunder and lightning, very much matching the pace of her music...quite a mood actually...then it just poured! Everyone just drenched!

  • Day lillies...summer flowers!

Do I write my journals in long hand? You betcha! My Flower note book dates from 1992, waterstained and faded but marking the changes in the yard and garden.
Shared here  are also some lilies from my yard and from our church garden, where  I do some  work, and like the contrast to the clinker historic brick.

One quote from Henry Ward Beecher: "Flowers have a mysterious and subtle influence on feelings, not unlike some strains of music... they relax the tenseness of the mind and dissolve its rigor."

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
