  • Court this week....

in addition to the more serious cases of spousal abuse or driving a skidoo while intoxicated and Band Es, there was the one man who tried to sell the stolen polar bear carving to the local RCMP officer the same week!

  • The Power outage....

or the potential one was the topic of two meetings this week to come up with a disaster plan. A general meeting in the hamlet and our homework was each group was to plan how they would react if a power outage occurred. At the health center this afternnon we were identifying what groups would be at risk, and in addition to those who were medically fragile such as on O2 or mentally ill, there was mention of the " northern challenged " or southerners who had just moved north....because the Inuit have been living in these conditions for eons. The example was the need for warm enough clothing or remembering to vent or open windows if using coleman stoves inside.

  • Beer and Pizza Nunavut Style......Knowing this work stint would be about 2 months I brought with me a six-pack from one of the local micro breweries in Edmonton...Alley Cat that offers a varierty from Full moon pale ale to Aprikat. Have allowed myself on bottle with dinner each week and this combination with home made pizza including caribou, grated cheddar and canned pineapple.

  • Puppy Dilemma

Dreams and hopes that are not fulfilled at the moment but maybe years later…I am wondering if that is the situation with the bringing a puppy from the north. If not this trip then maybe this summer.

At the moment it does not seem to be coming together. Have been watching puppies from my window and thought logical place to start by asking neighbours who are owners. Firstly permission to feed them treats and then finding one the appropriate size for my carrier. One husky mother has had two puppies born about 3 weeks ago but they would still be too young and have to be bottle fed, every few hours. There is one husky pup born in Nov/Dec that if I could catch him the owners said I could have him. The dog that he stays with is tied up and not very well fed, had presumed was the mother. So this may be one possibility if can coax with treats over the next week.

Then there was the discussion with another family about “dog mitts” and you don’t need to know the details.

Practicalities for having a dog when one travels.

Tonight had another visitor who is about 3 months old, a Greenlandic husky but owner runs a dog team and may not want to part with any of the pups. But definitely curious and very much smelling of seal.

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
