Month: January 2010

  • Sunday Morning Musings

Mid Lenten term blues is a term that is often applied to students around this time of year, especially for those that are away from home. Memories of Christmas vacation seem but a pleasant blur and reading week or spring break cannot come soon enough.

Others in northern climates find the lack of light difficult or may even suffer from SAD..Seasonal Affective Disorder, needing special lamps to infuse the extra Vitamin D.

Alberta fortunately had cold but usually bright sunny winter days, as opposed to overcast dull rainy months of west coast climates. Most provincial governments have declared a mid-winter holiday ours being Family Day, Monday February 15.

So where have the mid-winter blues hit me personally? Quite frankly I miss being north and I mean further north, working in one of the small Nunavut hamlets for January and February as has been my pattern for the past 8 years….I miss the hunkering down with a good book in the evening; sewing classes with co-workers and Inuit ladies, looking outside and wondering whether a blizzard day will be declared or if I will be donning multi-layers to trek across the open field; potluck Friday dinners with nurses, social workers and teachers; Sunday morning 11 AM services totally in Inuktitut with wandering children and welcoming smiles, attending an evening of drum dancing or a community feast; talking to the dogs on the way to work; figuring out  a casserole of soup of the remaining supplies in the fridge, wondering if I am really going to pay $5 for that grapefruit or mango at the Northern; making muffins; getting out on the x-c skis at 1 PM on a weekend afternoon to catch the few hours of light; my nose and right cheek with frost bite and  mostly, the friendships developed.

For a variety of reasons, I will not be going up this winter. It would seem that the need for casual social workers is decreasing as the Dept. is hiring and filling the positions on a more permanent basis. If indeed that is the situation, this is excellent for continuity in the communities….but personally I will miss these treks!

“A door closes and others will open but does not mean one cannot grieve the loss of the first.”

So come summer….well I better be some where in the Arctic in July!

    .

  • Under a different light...

    The days are lenghtening

and managed an after work run with the dogs about 5:30 PM

just at sunset....like the outline and framing of the trees here.

  • On the road again....

is the theme of the week for our photo challenge.http://dailyphotos.xanga.com.

With the new snow again I did the usual run with the dogs in Mill Creek ravine, early this morning. For Nanuq and Dysis every time we go out it is a new adventure and  "on the road again. "

Both these shots were taken in December but changing to black and white and sepia adds a unique effect....the simplicity and silence of this world in the middle of the city but enthusiasm of the dogs,

  • TRUST YOUR INTUITION AND FIND THE “HOW”

As I come to this quiet snowy Saturday morning almost near the end of January the above affirmation  is one I need to hold onto as am in one of those “ life  seems out of balance " times. Nothing overly serious but perspective helps. My writing and sitting with things seems to help get that perspective… to move the inner dialogue outwards.

So what has the past week been like? A quick glance at those status updates on facebook…it has been full since the ski escape to Jasper. Have just finished a full week that has included:

    • a two day workshop at the Salvation Army a good 2 day CISM conference on "Grief following Trauma"… the reminder that in this process which has its own pace, as caregivers, we need to walk along side, not leading or pushing but just being....presence often more important than words.

    • A side note we have all be concerned on the very tragic situation with the earthquake in Haiti. I hope you have found the right organization for you to give whether large or small.
    • Working days discovered have to come up with a different solution for bored dogs in the yard and overflowing compost heap! Wednesday morning set off to the hospital thinking all was organized with clay baker dinner in the fridge and notes for the granddaughter to load into oven upon her arrival at 3 PM…at 5 PM I picked up the email that she had lost her house key. Yoga with Makayla and Avery...downward dog, sun salutation and warrior pose which looks like one of my arctic carvings! Next morning not only 2 teens off to the bus but dogs to day care and myself off to work on foggy slippery roads all by 8:30 AM!
    • Two days of orientation at the hospital, normally I cover on casual basis obstetrics, but this stint is going to be in Internal medicine…all the interdisciplinary teams are color-coded involve at least 5 different wards and doctors that rotate every 10 days.
    • Interspersed with this have been two dental appointments..Yeah, yeah! And two morning swims to maintain one’s sanity!

I am heading into three weeks of work at the hospital and days are going to be busy without alot of time for reflection. My concerns perhaps are financial as there is much on the credit card. My income is cyclical and not settled about a contract north in March-April and even wondering if this will come to be or if I should let it go until the summer. There may be a few extra weeks I can at the hospital but wont know until the end of the month. Then there is also the concern about house care and dogs.

I know this will settle and shift and thus TRUST YOUR INTUITION AND FIND THE “HOW”

So to find “the how” has a little bit to do with planning and priorities. The most important thing or one of the most important things is a sense of organization and you have to remember this is the woman who has the pile theory of organization. Both in the house and my day timer.

Time to launch into that quick “to do” list…

Things to do quick list….Saturday January 23, 2010

Dogs sleeping, fresh snow falling almost 10 AM and in a better mood than yesterday I am using these to focus:

    • Time and energy are finite and need to be focused in the right direction.
    • Allow my own control and centeredness in the midst of uncertain events.

Make decisions as best I can, based on the information I have and let the rest go

    Ending on a humorous note…

Trimming edges of donated stamps that I have to deliver to the Canadian Bible Society is a great way to deal with the frustration of being on hold for the airlines or telephone company!

    HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND ALL!

  • Jasper in January

Lesson in aging #34: If the downhill skis in the garage are taller than you and in flourescent colors, rentals for the weekend are a better bet, esp. if the young clerk tells you that boots and poles are included but snowboarders don't use poles!

Lesson #65: if your bindings keep slipping out on the first Sunday run from the top of the basin when yesterday “everything worked” something is wrong!..e.g.grabbed the wrong rental skis or someone else yours.

Lesson #15:next time when booking the hotel and looking forward to an end of the day soak specify a bath tub as well as the queen sized bed, other wise it is a shower due to full bookings!

These are a few of the humorous learnings from the past weekend, which was quite perfect and fabulous considering that I had not been downhill skiing in the Rockies for at least five years or more. Usually this time of year I am working up north. Decided to get a package that included bus up and back to Jasper and hotel on Saturday night. It was great not to have to do that 4-hour drive but we left at an ungodly hour of 5:30 AM, so had to be up and packed an hour earlier to get across the city. On bus ride up about 9 am just out side of Jasper Park boundary Day light breaking from bus window... slept for first half and stopped at A&W in Edson for breakfast Got dropped off right at the main entrance and lift tickets already purchased...no line ups!  Looking out from deck of lower lodge...getting boots on, & putting other bags in day locker about 11 AM Outside main lodge. Note the snow covered spruce trees Beginning of the day ...line up for two chairs but all went fairly quickly Map of Marmot Basin runs...yellow denotes skidoo runs and red is out of bounds...were doing a few shots to trigger avalanches in these areas Saturday was sunny just a few degrees below freezing and fresh packed snow...just perfect conditions Looking down hill about noon...green means easiest runs

Stopped at edge of run near spruce trees..Lots of fresh snow from previous day…this photo confirmed my later suspicions of rental ski switch! My first fall practically on the flat!

About noon Saturday looking down towards the main lodge Slow and merging trails are marked by warning signs looking down valley ski patrol assisting after an injured skier

Stuck to the main chairs and just sunglasses needed Stopped for lunch at upper lodge...melting icicles on window pane Snowboard collection outside upper lodge at lunch Last run from top on Saturday about 3 PM Unloading at top...new high speed chair lift

Jasper the Bear.. taken Saturday evening after wandering to see outdoor street winter festival “ Jasper in January” Stayed overnight at Astoria Hotel and caught 9:40 AM shuttle bus in morning.

Weather on Sunday still lovely but changing between overcast and sunny. View from chair ..sun through trees

Overcast. like the sun behind the peak, ski instructor with student

Can't get much better than this!

  • Some weekend photo pics...

About a week ago I filled the feeder in the back yard and already the sparrows and chickadees have emptied it... like the red mountain ash berries that add mid winter color.

These two shots were take about 2 PM Saturday from the inside of a day ski lodge...the sun was shining and melting the ice dripping on with outside window thus giving the blurred effect and yet well framed the icicles dripping from the outdoor eaves.

This fits with the weekly theme from http://dailyphotos.xanga.com. oF SOMETHING BLUE

  • Night photography and Olympic torch run...

Despite nippy fingers waiting in line for the  torch run, batteries needing changing...this is one of a few shots got tonight I like....sponsors of course, for the Winter 1010 Olympics!

Here are the balance of my shots which have some interesting effects considering the above difficulties, of our foray out along the route to watch the run, standing for about half an hour.

All in all there were over 50 torch bearers in the run in Edmonton.

The spot we chose was in about the middle at 5:30 PM, Gateway Blvd and 86 Ave. The temp was minus 8oC and the sun was just past setting.

Roads were closed in sections and as the mid time of rush hour traffic some driver often found them selves being cheered.

The city police and RCMP often preceded the runners and the Coke people gave out souveniers ...even our local MP and leader of the the NDP party were out shaking hands and encouraging " Go Canada Go! "

When the young runner arrived and changed bearers it was done very quickly and then the torch proceeded through the river valley and down town where a larger celebration and lighting of the city cauldron took place about 6 PM

The blurriness of some of the photos gives an appropriate sense of motion I think....

  • NUNIES 2009...would love your vote! Link now working....

Now those of you who are not northern or Nunavut bloggers ( see the link on left side of my blog ) will have NO idea what this is about... but it is something like the Junos or the Oscars but just for fun!

As northern bloggers  we have created quite a community and different than other areas the degree of separation is probably 2 degrees not 6 degrees, as the population of Nunavut is only 28,000 but spread over avast area of Canadian Arctic...so as a blogger one has also very likely met each other in an Iqaluit airport or B&B in Arctic Bay or walking home from work in the same hamlet.

My work since 2002 about two stints per year takes me to  one of the communities in Nunavut and I blog about my time there....so where is this leading? This year entered one of my blog entries and would like your vote for BEST BLOG POST 2009 on this link

    http://kiggavik.typepad.com/the_house_other_arctic_mu/2010/01/the-nunies-2009-edition-voting.html

    "
Its time for the final round of the 2009 Nunies.  Voting is open until 5:00 pm Eastern Time, Thursday the 21st of January  Voting is limited by IP address, meaning that only one vote will be allowed per IP address. "

There are other categories and if you live in UK, Australia, America or Europe you may learn a little more about our northern arctic Canadian world!

My blog entry was done this past July when in Kimmirut, a small hamlet of about 400 on the SW corner of Baffin Island...http://bonnieupnorth.xanga.com/707220432/country-food/ and if you have no idea what country food is well....

    Come north and go exploring!

  • Tree in the ravine..

Walking the dogs yesterday I followed the  frozen creek bottom and looped back on other trails than my usual . Came across this decorated spruce tree. some one had added tinsel and ornaments  ..abit unusual but fun surprise ...also the daily photo shot http://dailyphotos.xanga.com...taken just at sunset about 4:30 Pm so needed my flash.....

About me...

An Albertan & Canadian, definitely a northern gal. Social worker by profession, this blog has included some of my work over 10 years in Nunavut from 2002 on. Passionate about slowing down & taking time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors or kindness in relationships as gifts & blessings; injustices against children in situations beyond their control; my faith; Nature, experiencing the outdoors whether cycling, walking. x-c skiing or gardening, my dogs, capturing on film God's beauty, experiencing life intensely & with the senses, richness of late afternoon light, wind in my hair cycling with my dog on a beach road, couching inches from an arctic flower or alpine lichen to capture it with my camera, insight of a student's new learning, a good conversation over a coffee.
